Al Attiyah: "Disfrutaré más cuando Sainz y Peterhansel no lleven un buggy"

Después de ganar el año pasado el Dakar con el Toyota Hilux de tracción a las cuatro ruedas, Nasser Al Attiyah terminó segundo en la edición de 2020 a seis minutos del buggy de MINI X-raid de dos ruedas motrices de Carlos Sainz.

Aunque el margen final de la victoria fue pequeño, los 4x4 solo ganaron tres de las 12 etapas del Dakar 2020, con Al-Attiyah, su compañero de equipo Giniel de Villiers y el piloto con el MINI 4x4 Vaidotas Zala consiguiendo un triunfo cada uno.

Por su parte, entre Sainz y su compañero Peterhansel se alzaron con ocho etapas, mientras que la restante fue para Mathieu Serradori con el buggy Century CR6.

"Este [Hilux] es una evolución completa, pero hemos reducido la brida [que restringe la entrada de aire al motor] 1 mm y ese es el problema. Desde el inicio [de la maratón] hemos perdido una hora por el milímetro de diferencia", explica Al Attiyah.

"No quiero decir nada malo, pero la normativa entre el buggy y el 4x4 no es justa. Por ejemplo, los últimos tres o cuatro años con el Peugeot [buggy], cuando venían lo hacían con un buen coche".

"El próximo mes que viene analizaremos todos los datos, porque tenemos todos los de MINI y los de Toyota, y la FIA deberá organizar, porque tendremos toda la evaluación y el buggy es más rápido que el 4x4".

"Disfrutaré más cuando vea a Carlos y a Stéphane llevar un 4x4, no un buggy", respondió Al-Attiyah cuando Motorsport.com le preguntó si le gustó enfrentarse a Sainz y Peterhansel en la edición 2020.

La normativa permite a los buggies montar una brida de 39 mm, mientras que a los 4x4 de aspiración normal se le recortó el diámetro de 38 mm a 37 mm antes del Dakar de 2019 en Perú, que sin embargo sí ganó Toyota.

Tras el qatarí, los coches de tracción a las cuatro ruedas ocuparon los puestos del cuarto al séptimo en la clasificación final del Dakar 2020, aunque en la maratón perdieron de 40 a 80 minutos respecto a Sainz.

"Si se compara con el pasado noviembre en [el Rally de] Marruecos, nos quedamos completamente sorprendidos esta vez, porque después de que en Marruecos estuviéramos liderando, ahora fue una historia diferente".

"Para mí, el MINI llevaba el motor limitado en Marruecos y aquí iba al máximo, no hay duda”.

"Si ves el segundo coche de tracción a las cuatro ruedas, ¿a cuántos minutos está de mí? Muchos. Siempre estuve apretando, pelando, incluso con el MINI. Los 4x4 están demasiado lejos. No es fácil".

Sin embargo, Al-Attiyah no quiso quedar como un mal perdedor y reconoció el trabajo hecho por sus rivales.

"Fue una gran lucha y bien hecho por Carlos, por Stéphane y por mí. Fue un gran Dakar y estamos muy contentos de estar aquí, en Arabia Saudí, un país nuevo. Creo que ahora la mayoría de gente cambiará de opinión sobre el país”.
